This beautiful book accompanies the National Gallery's new display of its Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and early Modern paintings, which begins in September 2006 and continues until May 2007. The most significant collection of its kind in the United Kingdon, these masterpieces include some of the most popular paintings in the world, and will be complemented by important long-term loans other collections. The National Gallery: "Manet to Picasso" focuses on 38 works made between 1860 and 1905. It begins with a short introduction by Christopher Riopelle on the formation of the collection, before discussing each of the chosen works (which are arranged chronologically by artist). It includes highlights such as Manet's Corner of a Cafe-Concert, Monet's Water-Lily Pond, Gallen-Kallela's Lake Keitele and Cezanne's Bathers (Les Grandes Baigneuses). Another key painting will be the recently acquired Afternoon in the Jardin des Tuileries by Adolph Menzel. There is also a short chronology. Celebrating a remarkable permanent collection that is the envy of museums and galleries around the world, the display will attract significant press interest. This book provides an introduction to this great group of paintings.
Christopher Riopelle is Curator of Nineteenth Century Painting at the National Gallery, London. Charlotte Appleyard, Sarah Herring, Nancy Ireson and Anne Robbins are Assistant Curators of Nineteenth-Century paintings at the Gallery.
